Lift Every Voice: A Journey through Black History celebrates the contributions of Black people to the world through creative expression in spoken word, fine arts, and music. Participants are able to compete for awards by grade level, elementary school (k-5), middle school (5-8), and high school (9-12).

Black Poetry
Participants will memorize and recite a poem written by a Black author. Participants may also write, memorize and recite their own poems. 


Black Monologue
Participants will memorize and recite an excerpt from a literary composition (play or skit) written by a Black author. Participants may also write, memorize and recite their own work. 


Oratory
Participants will craft a 3-5 minute oration describing the theme “Lift Every Voice: A Journey of Black History” using examples from scripture, individual experience or global observations.


Creative Drawing

Participants will submit an original drawing inspired by the theme “Lift Every Voice: A Journey through Black History”. Photos of the original drawing should be submitted via JPG format.

Poster

Participants will create a poster inspired by the theme “Lift Every Voice: A Journey through Black History”. Photos of the poster should be submitted via JPG format.


Photography
Participants will submit one to three images they have taken in the last year (since February 2020) that relates to the theme “Lift Every Voice: A Journey through Black History”. Photos should be submitted via JPG format and saved between 1-5MB.


Dance
Participants will submit a video of up to 3 minutes of dance in the following areas, liturgical dance, mime, or expressive dance (tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip-hop, etc). 


Instrumental
Participants will submit a video of up to 3 minutes of an instrumental performance.


Vocal  
Participants will submit a video of up to 3 minutes of a vocal performance.
